In-class Prototyping Session

Findings

  • Rituals around sharing information: make those intentional again. This is the way it can be tied with fun devices while keeping a policy angle.
  • My project has a privacy angle. Survaillance. I should NOT lose that too much.
  • Next functions to try: press again & receive something back. A true exchange.
  • Exchange needs to feel like magic.
  • Content people want to share most are curated personal photos. Perhaps there can be two archives. One for internet and research artifacts. And one for personal photos.
  • Internet is a home for our generation and there are objects we love in this home.

Questions for user testing

  • What images and pdfs is most valuable to you? Do you have favorites? Leading Question
  • What kind of content do you imagine yourself sharing in this way?
  • If you could only carry 5-10 files on your person, what would make the cut? Why?
  • What's something you've saved digitally that you'd be devastated to lose if the platform hosting it disappeared?
  • Have you ever wanted to share a specific article, essay, or image with someone but felt the moment passed because it required too many steps?
  • Do you already "collect" digital things intentionally (bookmarks, screenshots, saved posts)? How organized is that?

Marven

  • What kind of content do you imagine yourself sharing in this way? / If you could only carry 5-10 files on your person, what would make the cut? Why?
    • Childhood memories from people who passed away - but not sharing with strangers.
    • Even for me - If she could choose what content she’s sending, she’d just do it with her phone.
  • Have you ever wanted to share a specific article, essay, or image with someone but felt the moment passed because it required too many steps?
    • High School, she wanted to send love letters and she was afraid of the reaction so much so she wouldn’t check her phone for days.
    • Not about anonymity - it’s about the stress. And having different devices you check for different purposes.
  • Do you already "collect" digital things intentionally (bookmarks, screenshots, saved posts)? How organized is that?
    • Would love a function to delete all accidentally created screenshots.

On Form: Medicine Capsule because this is antidote / treat to the bad times. Companion.

Ender

Fun USB tools for hacking; hack someone’s Zoom call.

Swiss Army knife;

Makes Ender think about underground; you can use this to sniff packets.

Passwords - Ender would be devestated.

Ender is the opposite of a hoarder.

Ender has kept one picture since Ender was 14. From summer camp when Ender was a teenager. Only thing kept.

Is this size ok? Yes, It’s about the memory - not about being HD? Beautiful screen says Ender.

Pinterest & Discord (to talk to people). That’s the only social media Ender has.

Social Media is for talking to people instead of sharing about yourself.

Duban

  • He wants to know if the content was sent.
  • If cloud was to fail - he wants to keep - Family Photos; School Work; Crypto Currency (but people lose jewelry & airpods);
  • For laser cutter, you need flash drive, so he says it would be good to carry a device like that. Although that’s just a flash drive…
  • A use case he liked: Share with all your friends, you take photos, and share this way - just like beep. Feels like magic he likes it.
  • If there were gestures, it makes it feel like magic.

Shane / Xueyu Li

Would share music; little secrets; short funny video;

Would be sad to lose photos or notes (writes diary in the notes);

But this would not be public.

Photos first to share = photos together.

Sending memes is also interesting.

Good poems. Doesn’t read articles so wouldn’t be interested in the pdfs.

Maybe sending news. Interesting news or interesting post.

This is more flexible than sharing with a phone.

Jericho

  • Would save content he doesn’t want people to see; like a media safe.
  • He liked the gesture idea for a group to share. Like the gay snap ?
  • Reminds him of a pager. Worn on a belt. He thought it was super cool. Social status.
  • Jericho doesn’t see much use until I pitched the fashion element.
  • y2k revival.
  • Reminded him of Apple iPod Nano.
