Loom Build Notes

M4 Heat-Set Inserts

  • Use the larger M4 inserts (better fit). A smaller M4 outer-diameter variation is also in the box.
  • Everything is in the same box.
  • The M4 kit with tape on top has M4s with a better-suited diameter.
  • Heat set should be slightly larger than the hole so it melts into the 3D print.
  • Screws required are M4, which is why inserts are M4.

Soldering Tutorial Notes

  • Use fume extraction if available.
  • Iron temperature: 340°C. Wait for iron to fully heat before applying pressure.
  • Heat conducts through the heat-set — avoid prolonged contact.
  • Apply light vertical pressure only; do not twist the iron back and forth.
  • Heat sets should sit flush with the 3D print surface.
  • Inserts are not meant to be screwed in.
  • Only insert heat-sets after fully assembling the part on the table first; otherwise the black piece (missing outer casing) must be removed.

Soldering Fume Safety

  • Solder suckers can be borrowed from the 4th floor, or work at the Tandon makerspace.
  • Alternatively, wear a mask. PLA fumes are not toxic but are melted plastic.

Printing

  • Pre-cut version did not fit due to insufficient tolerance (noted in the creator's description).
  • Correct slicer: Orca-Flashprint5.
  • Prints done on the "Amy" printer at ITP 4th floor; pick up from the Amy blue basket.
  • If printing is needed, ask in the lab chat for someone on-site to send the job.
  • Version with supports worked.

Fixing Premature Heat-Set Insertion

  • No parts missing — excess PLA can be removed instead of reprinting.
  • Remove excess PLA with small pliers (found in the cut drawer).
  • If pliers don't work, remelt PLA with the heating tool and push it out from the other side.

Required Materials (still needed)

  • 2 strings (use polyester sewing thread in the lab as placeholder; nylon/poly threads available at the ability lab).
  • 2 rubber bands (check 4th floor junk shelf or ask ITP 4th floor Shop staff in purple aprons).

Presentation

  • Final presentation for Danahleah scheduled for the 18th.
  • Threading required before presenting.
  • Plan: complete the build, then have a teaching artist test it to identify extra parts needed before the presentation.
