Hypercinema Sound Vacation: A day morphs
Assignment: (Option A) In teams, collect sounds for a sound vacation. This could be informational, fictional, sensual, spoken-word, musical. It could be about infrastructure, architecture, people, or something completely different. Be specific, and transport us to another location through a 1-2 minute journey crafted through sound. No longer than 2 minutes.
Get transported to a day where you’re able to find peace in the same places that gave you struggle. The struggle comes first, in the morning. Our girl goes through her day, it’s rocky, she’s exhausted. She has lunch and takes a deep breath and suddenly everything changes. She’s back out on the street, but now she’s in touch with music, color and finding joy in the little things. Could replicate two sentiments and how would we transition from morning to afternoon?
We started off with ~150 sounds we recorded ourselves. I found it tough to categorize and select sounds. I’m typically a hoarder of content and memories. We split up the editing into three sections: Morning (Alyssa), Lunch Transition (Xueyu), and Afternoon (me). After completing our individual edits we compiled them together and made final adjustments.
Learnings:
- Everything sounds better in layers.
- “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter”.
- Project Manager feature on Premiere Pro for collaboration.
- Feedback: set tempo with underlaying audio that connects the whole experience, for example a breath track.
Questions that arose:
- Can we use the samples we did?
- How do I credit someone else’s conversation? Is it ethical?
- How do we align overall volume post working individually?
