PLAY

pure generalist

let me come in and see what issues you’re having (Even if its just hiring).

you need to create.

if you’re building &

  • go to hackathons; demo days.
  • make videos / projects on Twitter.
  • drop thoughts once a day.
  • Cowork spaces; demos;

“I work with code, product, market and get shit done.“

What is the engineer post AI?

Ask Nicole who’s a startup that needs someone like me.

Companies

‣
All options
  • Design studios, innovation labs, cultural institutions, media orgs, R&D teams
  • Analytics-heavy orgs
  • NGOs, public institutions, niche consultancies, innovation units

Specific Companies I admire

  1. Yukai Engineering Inc.
  2. Fashion companies - e-commerce - supply chain;
  3. Woop; Oura Rings;
  4. top 10 VCs in NYC

Skills

  1. Rapid Prototyping - I can design, build, test, and iterate solo as well as create and implement go-to market strategy
    1. Full Stack Web Dev Stack
    2. Eletronics
      1. → danger: fast prototyping with eletronics is not my strength.
      2. Should I go for product design instead?
  2. Technology Strategy

Groups of Strengths

  1. Comfortable across software, hardware, and narrative framing.
  2. Rare combination of research literacy; deployment and public policy.
  3. Storytelling / Brand Narrative
  4. Demonstrated ability to ship experiential, interactive systems

Soft(er) skills

  1. Institutional traditional credibility (NYU, EU, Fulbright, UN-adjacent)
  2. Comfortable with ambiguity

Evidence of AI / Full stack development work

  1. Data Engineering (Wrangling, Analysis and Pipeline Development); Web Developer & Research Assistant @NYU, developing software and data pipelines on a climate-risk research project
  2. → Creating a machine learning training set that powers accurate climate-risk visualisations with Python.

  3. Center for Responsible AI → creating AI persona for ALS patients

How hiring managers will pitch me

  • Engineer who understands society, people and institutions and our industry with good ideas and who takes initiative
  • Bridge between research, product, and storytelling - for smaller teams.

Evidence of Social Good / Impact Driven Work

  1. Software developer, Unbabel / Center for Responsible AI helping ALS patients create their own AI persona
  2. Research Assistant, NYU, developing software and data pipelines on a climate-risk research project

2022 ∙ Project co-lead on Intergenerational Justice, Generation Climate Europe

2021 ∙ Art Counsellor and Advisor, Terragon Nature Labs (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

2022 ∙ Friend of the European Climate Pact, European Commission

2020 ∙ Social Impact Case Competition Jury, 180 Degrees Consulting

2019 ∙ Social Impact Consultant, 180 Degrees Consulting

Fundamental Beliefs

  1. Socially mindful businesses are profitable and worthwhile.
  2. IoT with biosensors embedded in furniture is about to take over in a way everyone wants to resist, but can’t. Seamless integration.

Hardware and consumer eletronics - Fashion as interface

  1. Charming robots and fashionable AI companions for daily life and fashion girlies will dictate. More and more collaborations between fashion and tech companies.
    1. Jewelry can function as infrastructure without announcing itself as such. Rituals makes information exchange legible and human again.
    2. Fashion and ornament are early, powerful interfaces of selfhood.
  2. Single Purpose (Playful) Hardware is the future for the privileged. The new gaming. It creates healthier relationships with technology than multipurpose devices.
  3. Corporations should not be the default custodians of memory, culture, or identity. Society is almost ready to enforce this. Being a slave to your one device is for the non-privilege.
  4. Playfulness and ritual are interaction design tools. Our rituals with our daily tech are rooted in consumerism and abundance. We’ve reached the limit as a society.

Infrastructure for Meaning

  1. Humans are tired of doing the labour of passing information between apps (hAPI).
  2. Data is the new gold. It needs to be given meaning. Extracting relevant data about daily life from the conglomerate of products we use has huge potential.
  3. People are looking to simplify their lives. Everyone is tired.
  4. Human-curated knowledge is more valuable than algorithmically generated or optimized content.
  5. Source material matters; summaries, feeds, and SEO erode how knowledge is understood.
  6. Knowledge should remain intact, situated, and traceable to human intention.
  7. AI is flooding culture faster than humans can contextualize it.

Interests

  • Furniture / Existing in physical spaces
  • Memory / Aggregation of the past so individuals aren’t held hostage by their computers.
  • Sustainability driven
  • Profiling of users in a more ethical way
  • Experiential Retail Design x Popups / personalization
  • Accessibility in information

Personal Pitch

Why I did what I did and how does this connect to what I want to do moving forward?

  1. Studied business and worked at the EU because I believe everyone should feel empowered to create their own systems and solutions and know where the tools are.
  2. At the EU, had direct contact with the public policy and teams that shape where technology and society is going.
  3. Quit my job, started learning how to code and eletronics. Since then, been working with impact startups as a developer.

Projects

Thesis: First bluetooth prototype; getting a device to send information to another & minimal upload phone flow
Research Project at Tandon on Making Fashion Accessible
Connected Devices
Soft Robotics
Touch Grass: Circular screen PCB
(add OPT timeline)

Next Steps

  1. Are there any well paid artist–technologist-first jobs? Is the answer really a sure no? Artist who builds systems vs Engineer who does art.
  2. Dan Shiffman → Tech & Society
  1. 2 sets of materials
    1. 1

    2. Creative technologist roles
    3. Cultural institutions
    4. Art + tech studios
