Thesis Checkin - Experiments

Lighting & Visuals for Shows

Findings

  1. DMX requires layout planning, because of the amount of cables.
  2. It’s a very lengthy work. Can be physically strenuous. Even for a simple event, it’s a lot of equipment, and a u-haul needs to be rented. Very low on sleep. Steps included scanning the space; 8 hours of set up and layout, more time for the event itself, 1.5 hours for take down and 1 hour to put equipment back in the studio and return U-Haul.
  3. Pre-viz in Three JS is helpful, but software should be built in a modular way for this.

What’s missing in the industry

  1. Pre-made rigs that pre-define light positioning, that attach to a specific light
  2. Real time nature: are there functions that could be set to predict where the music is going.
  3. Structure that can absorb vibrations from speakers and be a light holder.

arahLighting Design vs Product Design

Other boxes could include creative tool vs pop up tool.

I could be barring myself from coding / machine learning.

Who are producers?

Convergent / Divergent thinker. Producers are instigators. Find the creatives, partners, technical people who have the will and interest. How deep into lights do I need to go to achieve my goals?

Formal containers - If you could make anything, what would you make? Meaning When you’re leaning into production design, Can be hard to think of the smaller steps. Idea: Home lighting rig. Do I want to create a music festival or a space that hasn’t existed previously? Collaborate with a musician to do experiential design. I can try VJing. Homework - Material experiment: What if I write 5 mini proposals for events or experiences or festivals I’d wanna do? Include details about the scope, what the festival does, what kind of artists I wanna have. I can make images to go with them. One liner type projects.

Connection is the theme. Specify how for each project - TODO

There’s something about data about yourself and interactive furniture to be explored too. This could be a TIME project.

Questions from in-class presentation

  • Are there any forms or objects I’m leaning towards?

Ingredients of a successful thesis

  1. Creative Software Tool
  2. Product ready to be manufactured
  3. Be a topic-expert in a way that lets me do workshops and do world building.

My role

Creative and professional who’s able to translate concepts into functional items, and i do so with attention to aesthetic and form.

Sarah’s homework:

Class Thesis Homework: Make 5 prototypes for possibilities. “Time you will spend” refers to if you only have 20 mins, what is an experiment that can help you.

My own homework assignment: Look into MIT Media Lab project.
